Overberg Ruminant Day 2026
Practical insights for sustainable and profitable livestock production
The Overberg Ruminant Day, held at Roodebloem Research Farm on 13 August 2026, brought together producers, specialists and industry partners to share practical knowledge on livestock production. The programme focused on sustainable production systems, foot-and-mouth disease, lamb production, wool markets, local production data and the economic value of a livestock enterprise.
The day combined research, market information and practical farming knowledge to help producers make better decisions within their production systems. Below are the presentations available from the day.
Carbon footprint: Sustainable crop production with livestock and pastures
Prof Pieter Swanepoel
Prof Pieter Swanepoel focused on the role of livestock and pastures within climate-smart and sustainable production systems. Integrating livestock, crop rotations and pastures can reduce reliance on inputs, support natural soil processes and lower the carbon footprint of crop production.
Foot-and-mouth disease: The current reality and the way forward
Dr Muller Strydom
Dr Muller Strydom discussed the current foot-and-mouth disease situation, lessons from the spread of the disease and changing control measures. The focus was particularly on vaccination, biosecurity, traceability and their role in future disease control.
The better production lamb: Will you recognise it when you see it?
Prof Andy Hentzen
Prof Andy Hentzen looked at what defines a good production lamb, with a focus on growth, feed efficiency, conformation and selection. He also highlighted how genetics and adapted production systems can be used to meet market requirements.
Wool markets and trends: What does it mean for the sheep farmer?
Isak Staats
Isak Staats discussed global wool markets, production trends and the recovery in wool prices. The presentation also highlighted sustainable wool, traceability and the influence of supply, demand and geopolitical uncertainty on the outlook for 2026–27.
Data from the Overberg: Better decisions for livestock production
Hannelet Jordaan
Hannelet Jordaan analysed local Overberg data on wool, body weight, weaning weight and reproduction. The data showed how long-term records can help producers make better selection and management decisions.
Top Ruminant: The Voermol Symbiosis
Cornelius du Plessis (Voermol)
Cornelius du Plessis highlighted the Voermol Symbiosis and the value of an integrated approach to nutrition. The presentation also focused on quality, service and the value of long-term relationships within the production system.
The profitability of a livestock enterprise: Change your perspective
Ruben Badenhorst (Overberg Agri)
Ruben Badenhorst showed that the value of a livestock enterprise extends beyond its visible net margin. Benefits such as cash flow, financing savings, nitrogen credits, crop rotation, soil health and risk diversification contribute to the value of the total production system.
